|a This book was 1st issued in the bicentenary year of Charles Wilkins' translation of the Gita. The 1st part considers the reason for its initial appearance, under the sponsorship of Warren Hastings and the East India Company, and the impact it made on Western Romantics, Transcendentalists and Orientalists. The 2nd begins with a sketch of its role in the Indian national movement between 1880 and 1910, and the responses to it of Theosophists and Christian missionaries. Other themes include Gandhi's use of Gita in his propagation of non-violence (ahimsa), and the place of the Gita in some of the new religious movements in USA and elsewhere.
