Following the publications of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Robert Adam on Dalmatian monuments in the 18th century (especially Diocletian's Palace in Split), a local antiquarian community appeared in Dalmatia. Julije Bajamonti, Radoš Ante Michieli Vitturi and Ivan Josip Pavlović-Lučić helped shape first methodological approaches (autopsy, critical stance, comparative method) which in the first half of the 19th century helped develop a new generation of archaeologists and art historians.
