|a In the study described analyses of foreign language teacher talk were carried out on two data samples comprising transcripts of foreign language teaching sequences. One sample included teaching English, the other teaching Russian as a foreign language. The aim was to identify spontaneous affective speech in the observed teachers' classroom talk following Skalkin's (1973, 1979) view of communication components. The findings show evidence of many instances of spontaneous affective speech in teacher talk.
