520 8 |a Croatians first came to the Caribbean area after Columbus' fourth journey to America (1502 – 1504) and we find them here in many countries for almost half a millennium. Third and fourth generation Croatians live today scattered across Central America in a multiethnic and multilanguage environment and often speak the languages of the domicile countries and the Republic of Croatia establishes diplomatic links with these countries. The economic status of Croatian emigrants in this area is relatively humble, even though there are among them successful people in various areas of human activity. Twenty countries of Central America and the Caribbean are linked by a Croatian permanent mission at the UN in New York. The remaining six countries are diplomatically linked from the Croatian embassies in Brazil (Venezuela, Columbia and Trinidad), Madrid (Cuba) and Washington (Mexico and Panama). The Croatian General Consulate ad honorem in Venezuela's Caracas has been successfully active among the Croatian emigrants for 11 years now, and the current honorary consul is the respected businessman and publicist, one of the deserving founders of an independent Croatia, Zdravko Sančević
